The Family Jewels in NYC

New York City- Tuesday August 21st. School starts for me in Pittsburgh on Friday so this is the LAST of the summer vacation.

My sister and I were shopping for a corded landline.  Good luck with that!  You think you have something in mind but your choices are dictated by what is produced AND what is in stock.  But that ‘s another whole story.

As we walked by this Vintage Clothing and Accessories store on West 23rd Street, The Family Jewels, we saw a young woman working on getting the padlock out of the security gate. We chatted for a minute and said we’d be back.  The vintage tablecloths caught our eye.

Meet Liz.  She graciously consented to be photographed.  She patiently explained the different ways they procure the vintage items.  And you know how I like to ask people how they get started with their collections.  She has a collection of poodle items that were gifts from friends who know she likes poodles.   She had a poodle and that’s how it all started. See her tattoo and necklace! She had the most beautiful green eyes, too. Thanks, Liz!

  1. I’m a sucker for these places and go often. I bet Liz would be an interesting person to sit and chat with. That penguin ice bucket on the table in the 3rd photo caught my eye. Just this past Sunday, at a “Parking Garage” sale with a number of vendors, I purchased one just like it. Mom had one and, for $10, I couldn’t pass it by. Another vendor, about 30 feet way, was selling one for $45. (Thanks, Mom!)

  4. Love the aloha shirt on the hawaiian tourist in the hat!!! Not to mention the clothes-pins. My sister got most of Mom’s – old, glistening wood, makes you happy to hang out the laundry 🙂 I bought plastic, in vibrant colors to make me happy …. discovered they fade and break!!!

  7. Love, love, love the old wooden clothespins! I remember my mom hanging just-washed clothes out on the clothesline on Maple Street. We didn’t have a dryer and that was in the ’50’s — so many times, I wish we could all go back in time for a much simpler life. Ruth, good luck in the coming school year!! The kids around here started school on August 8 – they hardly even got any summer time at all. I used to love my 3-months off every summer.

  8. Not only did my mom hang her clothes outside, I still do too. My next door neighbor & I are the few people who still hang out. So those clothes pins aren’t so antic to us. Nice pictures. I do enjoy those kind of stores.
